The stakes have never been higher for the young Blue Bloods of Manhattan. After their brief yet beautiful bonding ceremony in Italy, Schuyler Van Alen and Jack Force depart for Egypt, desperate to find the elusive Gate of Promise before Jack must face his twin, Mimi, for a blood trial. A blood trial that only one of them can survive. But everything Schuyler thought she knew about the gate turns out to be a lie, and they soon find themselves ensnared in a deadly battle against the demon-born.

    Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
This is the eighth of the "Blue Bloods" series and readers should not attempt to jump in without having read the previous books. Schuyler Van Alen and Jack Force are now "bonded" which also means that Jack has betrayed his twin sister (in this incarnation), Mimi, who was left standing at the altar, so to speak. He plans to return to Manhattan and face the blood trial to determine which of them will survive, but Schuyler is sure he means to simply let Mimi win and persuades Jack to accompany her to Alexandria in a continuing search for the crucial Gate of Promise. Oliver, who is still in love with Schuyler, is now Mimi's familiar and has agreed to accompany her on a trip to Egypt from where they will enter Hell in search of Mimi's true love, Kingsley Martin. Little does Oliver know that Mimi intends to trade his soul for Kingsley's. The third set of interspersed chapters are told from Allegra Van Alen's point of view as she reconnects with Bendix Chase; readers unfamiliar with the series will only gradually realize that Allegra and Bendix are Schuyler's parents and this part of the story is taking place decades earlier than the other two story lines. Also, because there is no ordinary passage of times in Hell, it is difficult to reconcile the two contemporary series of events as related by Mimi and Schuyler. Characters are not particularly well developed and the language is occasionally awkward. Perhaps fans already enamored of the characters and familiar with the labyrinthine machinations to destroy the vampires will gloss over these flaws. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.
