Jo Jo Wigman was like every other girl except that she had a secret that no one knew about. There was a magic pickle that was living under her bedroom floor. The pickle could actually talk! Her class was going on a field trip and of course Magic Pickle accidentally fell into her backpack on the day of the trip. What an adventure the two of them had! Magic Pickle had to find a way to stop The Black Lagoon from covering the whole earth with peanut butter. This book is full of wonderful words, for example, "BWOOPBWOOPBWOOP," "schnozola," "splooarrch," and "thingamadoo." This is a chapter book and has lots of illustrations. The story will hold the attention of young readers. Even though the protagonist is a girl, boys will also like it. How can they not when descriptions like this are found throughout the story: "It was a nose, a giant nose that glowed green around the nostrils. It dripped a digital drip of yuckiest splat in front of another character." Fortunately there are other "Magic Pickle" books because when children read this one, they will want to read all the others. At the end of the story there is a book bonus that is a short story in graphic form. The author also includes pictures and short blurbs of other books about Magic Pickle. This is a must have when introducing chapter books. It is for both boys and girls and would make a terrific gift. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
