Meet the Magic Pickle, a dilly of a superhero who's fighting the food fight against a brotherhood of evil fruits and vegetables who are plotting to take over the world!

The full-color graphic novel version of the Magic Pickle legend! Magic Pickle, or "Weapon Kosher," as his creator, Dr. Jekkel Formaldehyde likes to call him, is the product of a top-secret U.S. Army lab. Unfortunately, the 1950s experiments to turn vegetables into soldiers went wrong. Sure, they created Magic Pickle, the flying dill soldier, but they also let loose a bunch of rotten vegetables, like the Romaine Gladiator, Chili Chili Bang Bang, the Phantom Carrot, and Peashooter. This Brotherhood of Evil Produce is out to take over the world and they've started

Jo Jo Wigman has a secret she'd like to share with you: there's a magic pickle living under the floor in her bedroom. The magic pickle—also known as Weapon Kosher—was created by Dr. Jekyll Formaldehyde when he accidentally dropped part of his lunch into a particle confabulator. Cryogenically frozen (in a pickle jar, of course) for the last 50 years, Weapon Kosher awakens, crashing through Jo Jo's floor ready to avenge evil. Out to rid the world of the Brotherhood of Evil Produce, Weapon Kosher must face such staunch foes as Chili Chili Bang Bang, Phantom Carrot and the most feared adversary—The Romaine Gladiator. Morse's quirky artistic style explodes over the pages and is visually engaging. Drawn with all of the humor and panache of a Saturday morning cartoon, readers will, er, relish the high-octane wordplay and puns. Jam-packed with rollicking action and over-the-top silliness, this is a perfect graphic novel for younger collections. A surefire hit that should appeal to fans of the Captain Underpants series. Gr 3-5 -After world-renowned scientist Dr. Jekyll Formaldehyde dropped his pickle into an experimental particle confabulator, he found himself in the possession of an unlikely but most noble superhero, Weapon Kosher. Now, after 50 years of cryogenic slumber, this pickle is supercharged, ready to face the Brotherhood of Evil Produce and fight for dill justice. The magic pickle teams up with Jo Jo Wigman, a sassy girl who has the questionable fortune of living above Dr. Formaldehyde's secret laboratory. This endearing and unlikely duo must take down the gang of evil, scientifically advanced superveggies before they reunite and do what rotten vegetables do best-reek havoc. This title's sly wit and fun, energetic art will be a great success with graphic novel fans and with those who appreciate puns and the kookier side of things.-Lauren Anduri, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

Different plot, different format, same cast: Running in parallel to published chapter-book episodes such as Magic Pickle and the Planet of the Grapes (2007), this scenario-setter introduces the bulked-up cuke superhero. Blasting out of a lab hidden beneath the floor of feisty everylass Jo Jo Wigman, he propels himself into battle with the Brotherhood of Evil Produce-in particular the quick and canny Romaine Gladiator. "Weapon Kosher" (his codename) comes through of course, dispensing "Dill Justice" to all villains while JoJo takes on class princess Lu Lu Deederly on the side. Portraying the nonstop action with an effervescent blend of discrete panels and insets, Morse depicts his flying pickled protagonist with muscular arms and a "tasteful yet mysteriously revealing" star above a pair of ferociously squinting eyes. Evidently to make up the page count, the author tacks on a short yet silly encounter between Pickle and a lottery-winning bazillionaire who's been transformed into a coconut, then closes with basic advice for aspiring cartoonists. Diverting and dill-ectable. (Graphic novel. 8-10)
