Join Maisy and her pals for Field Day! First is the egg-and-spoon race (oops, Eddie’s egg is a little too wobbly). No problem, there are lots more games to play — a wheelbarrow race, a three-legged race, and even a get-dressed-up-silly race. When it’s time to play ringtoss, Eddie’s trunk comes in handy, and in the relay race, Maisy and Charley run as fast as they can. Last of all comes a great big game of tug-of-war, where both teams fall down laughing at the end!

Come join Maisy, everyone’s favorite cartoon mouse, and her friends at field day! After the animal friends split into red and blue teams, they warm up by bending and stretching. First is the egg-and-spoon race. Eddie the elephant drops his egg! Oh no! There are many more games to play, thougha wheelbarrow race, a sack race, and even a get-dressed-up-silly race! After a healthy snack, the friends finish with a game of tug-of-war, and Maisy’s team wins. But both teams fall down laughing. It’s not about winning or losing, but having fun through getting exercise and playing games. The story articulates some concerns that children might have during field day, such as wanting to win a race or needing a break from the excitement. Staying healthy with exercise and nutritious snacks is emphasized throughout the story. Cousins’ illustrations are in her familiar style, including thick, black outlines and bright, primary colors. Maisy’s Field Day is part of the extended “Maisy” series. Reviewer: Beth D. Williams-Breault; Ages 3 to 6.School Library Journal
03/01/2016Toddler-PreS—Preschoolers' favorite mouse participates in her first field day at school. Maisy and her friends split into the red and the blue teams. They warm up and compete in a variety of outdoor races. After a snack, they finish with a game of tug-of-war, and Maisy's team wins. The friends express concerns that children will empathize with, like wanting to win and needing a break. Cousins's cartoon illustrations are as recognizable as ever, with thick, black outlines and bright, primary colors depicting Maisy and her friends in gym shorts, sneakers, and sweatbands. VERDICT A new and worthy addition to the series.—Mindy Hiatt, Salt Lake County Library Services
