In the busy offices of The Rodent's Gazette in New Mouse City on Mouse Island the staff, which includes Linda Thin Slice, Ya-ya O'Cheddar and Michael Mouse, is surprised when the publisher, Geronimo Stilton, shows up on the day before Christmas. They assumed he would be at home preparing for his annual Christmas Eve party. He had already decorated his home, putting out a new "WELCOME RAT MAT" and hanging cheese slices on a beautiful fir tree. Geronimo doesn't have an easy time of it, as one calamity after another befalls him. Despite a trip to the hospital after he trips over his tail and a fire in his apartment, he manages to have a wonderful party with all his friends and employees joining in. In a burst of good will he even calls up that all around pain-in-his-fur, his competitor, Sally Ratmousen, the publisher of The Daily Rat. The playful text is full of puns and, along with the busy illustrations, will definitely appeal to kids. 2004 (orig. 2001), Scholastic, Ages 7 to 10. Carolyn Mott Ford
