Mr. Putter can’t imagine why anyone would need to know one hundred ways to cook beans. His neighbor Mrs. Teaberry can, and she says a cooking class will be something new and fun for them to do. Mr. Putter isn’t so sure—he’d much rather think about an ice cream soda than all those beans. But Mrs. Teaberry has a way of talking him into things.

It turns out that learning one hundred ways to cook beans might be more exciting than Mr. Putter ever expected. With his cat, Tabby, and Mrs. Teaberry’s dog, Zeke, at the class with them, everything takes a chaotic turn when Zeke bites into something surprising—and beans go flying!

"Comprising seven short, smoothly written chapters, this story offers a bit of action, a bit of humor, and the suggestion that even unappealing new experiences can be worth a try. Fresh and spirited, Howard’s pencil, watercolor, and gouache artwork brightens every page of this book from the Mr. Putter & Tabby series for beginning readers."--Booklist

Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry are friends who live next door to each other. They are older (gray-haired) and he has a cat, Tabby, and she has a dog, Zeke. They do things together and take their pets with them. Mrs. Teaberry suggests that they take a cooking class where they will learn one hundred ways to cook beans. Mr. Putter would rather just have an ice cream soda, but he agrees to go with her to the class. They put their pets under the table and everything goes well until a lady reaches under the table to get her granola bar, but instead her hands goes into Zeke's mouth which is full of her granola bar. The table tips and beans are everywhere, but Mrs. Teaberry and Mr. Putter make the best of it afterwards by going to the ice cream parlor, eating their ice cream, and talking about the fun they had. This book is one of the "Mr. Putter and Tabby" series, and is a good-spirited, lively and humorous adventure of two friends and their adorable pets. Children will enjoy the hilarious illustrations and the endearing characters. Reviewer: Vicki Foote

PreS-Gr 2—Poor Mr. Putter! Once again, he is persuaded to go along with one of Mrs. Teaberry's crazy ideas. In this installment, she wants him to go to a cooking class focusing on 100 ways to cook beans. However, all Mr. Putter wants is a strawberry soda with a cherry on top. Zeke, Mrs. Teaberry's unpredictable bulldog, and Tabby accompany the couple to the class. Once it begins, Mr. Putter begins to snore standing up. Zeke is snacking on a granola bar he finds in someone's handbag just as its owner sticks her hand in. Mayhem breaks out, tables are overturned, the chef faints, and beans fly everywhere. This hilarious story is told with a minimal text that's perfect for beginning readers. Brightly colored cartoons of the animals' antics and the characters' expressions expand the humor.—Nancy Baumann, Indian Paintbrush Elementary, Laramie, WY
