Renita James is an attractive black woman. At age twenty-seven, she’s managed to fulfill her goals of graduating from Law School and situating herself in metropolitan New York City. But one goal still eludes her—Renita can’t seem to pass New York’s tough bar exam and become a practicing attorney. Until then, she’s stuck in an unsatisfying job as an admissions representative at her alma mater. Complicating matters are her obligations to family, particularly her ailing father and overworked mother. Renita devotes almost every weekend to traveling back to her native Philadelphia to provide her aging parents with the support they can’t seem to get from her nearby siblings.

Apollo ‘Paul’ Phillips is a white former attorney turned public school teacher and is heir to one of the city’s most lucrative law firms. Paul’s sister returns from Europe to pressure him into further compromising their deceased father’s vision for the firm by merging it with her husband’s. She also leaves the responsibility of her son to her brother and the boarding school creating additional tension between brother and sister.

The Paul and Renita meet and instantly fall for each other. But the demands in neither of their lives disappear. As their feelings for each other intensify, so do the outside pressures. Both families demand more of the respective couple. As the tension increases, it doesn’t seem possible to meet their responsibilities to other people, while holding onto what they’ve found with each other. Both wonder about their family when is it ever enough.
