Ovid (43BC - 17AD). Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso) was born at Sulmo in central Italy to an old equestrian family. After a career of minor judicial roles he started work in public service for writing, eventually becoming the leading Roman poet of his generation. He was exiled by the Emperor Augustus in AD 8.
