"I have un grando dare for Becca and Cat, " said Squidge. "You know this competition for Pop Princess? Well, I dare you both to enter." He looked pointedly at me. "And I mean both of you. Auditions are next Saturday."
Becca missed the fun of the school production of Grease, and she has a reputation of being fickle and a dreamer. But the Pop Princess challenge makes her determined to try harder than she has ever tried before. She has the voice, but has she got the staying power?

Two titles begin a new teen series by Mates, Dates, and Inflatable Bras author Cathy Hopkins. Sprinkled with Brit-teen slang, the Truth or Dare series introduces friends Cat, Becca, Squidge and Mac. In White Lies and Barefaced Truths, Cat is dared to talk to Becca's crush, famous dreamboat Ollie Axford, and she is stunned when Ollie flirts with her in the process. Is Ollie worth breaking up with Squidge over? The Princess of Pop, finds the gang trying out for the Pop Prince and Pop Princess talent competition. When self-doubting dreamer Becca is the only one of her friends to make it into the final rounds, she has to confront her fears in her quest to rule pop-dom. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Gr 6-8-As in Hopkins's "Mates, Dates" series (Pulse), the characters in these books are 14, but Cornwall, not London, is the setting. In Pop, Becca competes to become the British female version of American Idol. Though a talented singer, she's always lacked focus. This event teaches her an important lesson. She comes in third, but, in her heart, she's won. In White Lies, Cat, who is going out with Squidge, is kissed by newcomer Ollie, on whom her friend Becca has a crush. While sorting things out, Cat learns a lot about telling the truth-when it's desirable and when it's more appropriate to be diplomatic. She also learns to be more assertive and true to herself. The stories are humorous and very hip; Hopkins clearly remembers exactly what it's like to be 14.-Catherine Ensley, Latah County Free Library District, Moscow, ID Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
