Umbrella in one hand, flowers in the other, she found it easily enough in the municipal graveyard, amongst the rows of tombstones, a place put aside for those who had no name. Plot 171, a mound of damp mud, rain trickling over the soil in tiny rivulets the only sign of movement. No flowers, no name. Simply a wooden stake in the ground and the ignominious title: Plot 171. His new identity. She almost smiled. For a moment she stood still, struggling to believe that he really was underneath this anonymous pile of earth then she bunched the stems together and laid the flowers down. Roses, deep dark red, the colour of love, blood and betrayal and lilies, white and scented. Funereal. And dangerous. It was dangerous for her to be here. A woman, on her knees, tending an adjacent grave, glanced across at her curiously and asked her the same question the sextant had. ‘Did you know him then?’ She shook her head. And almost heard the cock crow. Another lie to add to the legion of lies she’d already told. What could one more matter? But somehow, compared to the others, this denial seemed the very worst. To rob him of his identity, to allow him to remain forever unknown, his grave unmarked, his name missing. For ever? Her mouth curved not with a smile but with cynicism, her eyes narrow, feline, cruel. Plot 171. The unknown soldier. She almost choked. But he was dead now and she could do or say nothing in reparation except give him back the dignity of his identity: his name. His past. She stood a moment longer, thinking. Phrases ran through her head. The unknown soldier. Known unto God. She made her decision. That would have to be enough. She turned and walked away, the phrase ringing in her ears. Plot 171. Known unto God.

Coroner Martha Gunn is baffled by the discovery of an unidentified body in the ruins of a local beauty spot.

On a bright spring morning, John Hyde opens the gates to the grounds of Moreton Corbet Castle, a local medieval ruin, and discovers the body of a homeless man with his throat slashed.

Detective Inspector Alex Randall and his team soon face some disturbing questions: was this a random attack, or does someone have a vendetta against the homeless? For coroner Martha Gunn, establishing the man’s identity is essential, but there are no clues . . . Who is he? What was he doing in the grounds of a Shropshire beauty spot?

As the mystery deepens, the need for answers becomes increasingly important. Can Martha and Alex solve the puzzle?

Early in Masters’s gripping sixth Martha Gunn mystery (after 2014’s The Devil’s Chair), the gatekeeper at Moreton Corbet Castle, an English Heritage site in Shropshire, discovers while inspecting the castle’s grounds a homeless man with his throat slashed. Det. Insp. Alex Randall leads the investigation in a most baffling murder case, while coroner Martha plays a subsidiary role. The few clues make identifying the victim unusually difficult. More questions arise once the police learn that he was a nice guy, polite and well-spoken, with no history of drug or alcohol abuse. How did he fall so completely off the grid? Alex becomes as eager to understand what motivated the dead man to abandon his respectable life as he is to catch the man’s killer. The intricate plot slowly builds momentum until reaching a surprising resolution. Details that hint at future developments for several characters will leave readers eager for the next installment. "This is an understated series that deserves attention"

Masters perfectly conveys the loss where her victim is concerned, giving him credence as a human being rather than as another statistic. In all, 'Recalled to Death' is Masters on full-throttle and I hope she continues in this same vein. Highly recommended.

"Very strong characterization coupled with an intriguing and well wrought mystery made “Recalled to Death” an extremely enjoyable read. I look forward to backtracking and reading the first five novels in this excellent police procedural series. (It doesn’t hurt that they all have very attractive dustjackets too!)"
