When tragedy befalls the village of Candlewood, Emma Garrett graciously opens the doors of her boardinghouse to those in need. But two guests prove so disagreeable, Emma wonders how she can turn the other cheek--and what will become of the rest of her guests.

Adding to the turmoil are the legal problems threatening the title to her house. And when Zachary Breckenwith makes a most surprising--and troubling--announcement, Emma's once-sure foundation is in danger of crumbling.

In a season of trial and uncertainty, Emma must discover anew the source of her strength.

It is a must-read for those who like to picture the past with its hard-working people and the simpler lifestyle, along with the refined romanticism.

In Refining Emma Delia Parr brings to life the town of Candlewood, New York with fun characters and great depictions of the setting. Readers are at once taken back to the time and place where community meant everything and the people lived simply. Parr takes special care in bringing the delightful characters to the forefront. People like the Reverend Glenn, Mother Garrett, matchmaker extraordinaire and Aunt Frances her partner in crime-all make the story more poignant and add color and depth to the sweet story.

Refining Emma by Delia Parr was a wonderful read. The book flowed wonderfully and the character's personalities were defined in the storyline perfectly. As a reader you saw and felt Emma's heart that she had for people and for her love of the Lord. Refining Emma was a book about the power of unconditional love and how we have the choice to use that power to change lives.
