It's Halloween and Splat is determined to be the scariest cat in the class. Unfortunately he's just too much of a scaredy-cat. He's afraid of a little spider, and everyone says his costume looks more silly than scary. And when the teacher tells a ghost story in the dark, Splat gets so frightened that he tips over his jack-o-lantern. But when the lights go back on, the entire class is scared silly by a small, black furry creature with a big pumpkin head. Whoooo could it be?

In Splat's latest holiday adventure, his "witch's cat" Halloween costume meets with an accident, so his mother uses a spider as inspiration to make him a new one. Unfortunately, his friends Spike and Plank don't even blink when he dons his "big, scary sock spider" costume, and Splat doubts he'll win the school prize for scariest cat. Splat's perma-flustered expression and the eye-popping dramatics of his fellow cats are particularly well suited to the chills of Halloween. Ages 3–7. (Sept.)

Part of the series about Splat the cat; this time around Splat wants to make up a scary costume for Halloween, but there is a slight problem. He is scared of everything spooky. He is scared of the spider in his jack-o-lantern. But with his mom's help he captures the spider and decides to take it to school the next day. But he still does not have a costume. Then he pretends he is a witch's cat riding a broom, until he trips and breaks the broom. Even his friend Seymour, the mouse, cannot make him happier. His mom comes to the rescue by stuffing stockings and tying them around Splat's body so he looks like a spider. Unfortunately, his friends are scarier than he is, so he is sure he will not win the scariest cat award. He just makes his friends laugh; they even laugh at his jack-o-lantern. His teacher, Mrs. Wimpydimple tells a ghost story and scares Splat so much he flips his pumpkin in the air, which then falls onto his head. As he goes bumping around the room, he scares all his friends and ends up winning the scariest cat award. The drawings are very funny as are the names of the characters. Kids will get a kick out of this. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan
