    CHAPTER 1

Scaredy Squirrel doesn't have a friend. He'd rather be alone than risk encountering someone dangerous. A squirrel could get bitten.

A few individuals Scaredy Squirrel is afraid to be bitten by:

    walruses

    bunnies

    beavers

    piranhas

    Godzilla

So Scaredy Squirrel finds interesting ways to pass the time all by himself.

    He reads.

    He whistles.

    He crafts.

    He yawns.

    He knits.

    He chats.

    He counts.

Until one day he spots ...

    Someone perfectly safe!

    The Perfect Friend

    (according to Scaredy Squirrel)

    bubbly personality

    squeaky clean

    quiet

    NO teeth

    germ-free

Doesn't do much, BUT is 100% safe!

A few items Scaredy Squirrel needs to make the Perfect Friend:

    lemon

    name tag

    mittens

    comb

    mirror

    air freshener

    toothbrush

    chew toy

How to make the Perfect First Impression:

    prepare freshly squeezed lemonade

make sure name tag is visible

    tame bad hair

brush teeth thoroughly and practice smile (check for nutty breath and food caught between teeth)

wear mittens to hide sweaty paws

use pine scent to smell delightful

    follow the Perfect Plan

Captivating illustrations and lively text make this book a fun read. The reader is hooked as soon as she turns to the inside flap where Scaredy, the worrisome squirrel, introduces the story. The reader's curiosity is further piqued by a warning sign on the next page. Very quickly readers start to understand a few things about the main character. First and foremost, he is afraid of everything, and, as a result, he has no friends. As the story unravels, Scaredy describes the many precautions he takes as he searches for a friend. Finally, just as he locates who he thinks will make the perfect friend, his plans are abruptly changed. Illustrations and text are skillfully woven together throughout the book. The pages are filled with engaging and interactive illustrations. Many of the pages contain split images, maps, charts, diagrams, and lively depictions of Scaredy's plans and ideas. This will hold the interests of young readers while at the same time teaching lessons about life and friendship. Additionally, readers become familiar with graphics such as maps, charts, and diagrams. Appropriate for a classroom or a home library, adults and children can enjoy this book together.

PreS - Gr 3 - Scaredy Squirrel is lonely, but he thinks that the pleasure of making a friend would be outweighed by the greater risk of potential danger. After all, there are a lot of things that bite out in the big world beyond his tree trunk such as beavers, bunnies, and, of course, Godzilla. Always thinking, Scaredy decides that the perfect friend (as in perfectly safe, clean, and quiet) would be the goldfish he spots across the park. He carefully outlines everything he will need to do to introduce himself to it, including handing over the Scaredy Risk Test to insure that his new friend is truly not a biter. What the squirrel doesn't plan for is the muddy, rowdy dog he encounters en route. However, he learns that friends come in all sorts of packages and that making an effort can really have rewards. The life lessons of the importance of overcoming one's fears and not judging on outward appearance are wrapped up in a witty package of deceptively simple cartoonlike illustrations that deliver great humor in a variety of lists and diagrams, such as the items Scaredy will need to make the perfect friend, how to outfit himself to make the perfect first impression, and an especially funny Perfect Plan map. The ebullient artwork, clever layout, and lively text make for a surefire hit.-Susan Moorhead, New Rochelle Public Library, NY

Muted-color illustrations downplay Scaredy’s anxieties and highlight the silliness of his over-the top tactics; playfully varied page designs add liveliness to a lighthearted story that doesn’t take itself too seriously ?

The humor is silly enough that kids with their own scaredy tendencies won’t feel preached at, and others will just appreciate the delicious ridiculousness that doesn’t keep Scaredy for getting the friend he needs.
