    VOYA - Susan Hampe
In this second book in The Slayer Chronicles, Joss is sent to New York City to lead a team against a loose vampire who is suspected of being a serial killer. Joss finds himself on thin ice with the Slayer Society after the fiasco of a recent summer (First Kill [Dial, 2011/Voya October 2011]). He must learn to navigate an unfamiliar cityscape as he sharpens his slayer skills and tries to lead his team members, who feel betrayed when they learn he had done some freelance slaying. Further complicating his mission are the nightmares he has of his dead sister, Cecile, and the mystery of why her name is recognized by several vampires. This is a solid read with a swift pace, and Brewer does a great job of building tension as Joss struggles with his duty as a slayer and the moral ambiguities of his job. The Slayer Chronicles is a parallel series to Brewer’s series The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod; it can be read independently of that series, but it is recommended that they be read in order. Fans of the first book will be back for more, and this title makes a great read-alike for fans of the Vladimir Tod series and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Ages 12 to 18.
    Children's Literature - Toni Jourdan
Joss McMillan is fourteen and returning from spending a school year away. Home is not what it used to be since he witnessed the death of his little sister, Cecile. His parents are in a perpetual fog and he does not fit in anymore. He is relieved when his uncle calls to ask if he could spend some time with him in New York. He packs his bags along with his slayer kit and heads for the Big Apple where there is a serial killer vampire murdering other vampires. Joss moves in with his uncle Abraham and the Slayer Society, who are not sure that they can trust him, plus they do not realize that he has already received his great-great-great Grandfather's stake. It was given to him by a vampire named Dorian. During the summer Joss had taken a side job of slaying a vampire in Bathory. This is against slayer rules and the punishment is death, except that his uncle has talked the elders out of the usual consequence and now he will be in charge of finding and killing the serial killer vampire, all on his own. This is no easy feat even for a slayer twice Joss's age. Then it turns out that it is not one vampire but four vampires sharing a "Brothers in Arms" killing spree. That is a tough job for a fourteen year old who is also receiving threatening texts from Kat, who used to be his friend until he killed Sirus. Then there are the dreams involving Cecile and her soulless eyes. A companion series to the "Vladimir Tod Chronicles," this time a sequel to Joss's first book. This series is a great read for vampire slayer fans. You can read the other series but it is not necessary to enjoying this book. Second Chance stands well on its own. Reviewer: Toni Jourdan
    Kirkus Reviews
After his failed freelance slaying mission in Bathory (First Kill, 2011), Joss is under the watchful eye of the Slayer Society as he leads the hunt for a serial killer in Manhattan. Hitting the vampire underworld of New York, Joss sets out on what he thinks is the right trail when he initially targets Em, the oldest vampire in existence. After some misdirection, Joss finally tracks down and stakes the vampire responsible for the serial killings--but the murders don't stop. Searching for the other killers, the slayer team starts rebelling against the strict authority structure of the Slayer Society and takes a new approach to hunting their prey. Still very much working within "companion" mode, Brewer skillfully inserts references to the Vladimir Tod series without making the story inaccessible to new readers from a plot standpoint. Tiresome characters compete with the action a bit too much throughout the narrative, with Joss' Uncle Abraham and his monologues about trust and betrayal particularly difficult to take. However, Joss is well-done when he's not dreaming, and fellow slayers Morgan and Ash are both welcome presences. Solid staking action keeps the pages turning, at least when Joss isn't dwelling in guilt over his sister's death. Fans will enjoy slaking their thirst for more vampire adventures here. (Horror. 12-16)
