A new land awaits the wolves of the Beyond.

A great cold and a powerful earthquake have shattered the Beyond forever, and the wolves must find a new home in order to survive. Their only hope lies in what they call the Distant Blue, a faint haze they can make out beyond the frozen sea.

Once an outcast, Faolan has spent a lifetime proving that he can be a leader. But as he steps out onto the narrow Ice Bridge the wolves will follow to the Distant Blue, Faolan may be leading his friends into terrible danger. The Distant Blue could save the wolves, or it could be another broken land. And the wolves will face jagged ice, howling winds, and unknown threats from the deep just to get there. Can the refugees work together to reach their new home? Or will Faolan and the last remaining wolves of the Beyond be lost forever?

In the sixth book of the “Wolves of the Beyond” series, a powerful earthquake has struck, and an arctic chill has overtaken the Beyond, the place the wolves call home. It has been destroyed, along with the long-held traditions of their wolf clan. The wolves have only one chance of survival: crossing a mysterious bridge that leads to an unknown location. Though they are uncertain, they believe it goes to a new land. Foalan, the leader of a pack of wolves, bears, an owl and two eagles, leads the animals on the journey to cross this treacherous, icy bridge. They adventure off to this new land they call the “Distant Blue,” traveling miles over a frozen sea in search of a new home. The journey is terrifying, forcing them to overcome rifts and powerful winds along the way. They meet other creatures that help them through their journey. This story will keep readers on their toes; it has no dull moments. Lasky has created an extraordinary, imaginary world. The “Wolves of the Beyond” series is told in third person omniscient, which helps the readers empathize with all the different animals’ perspectives. Each chapter focuses on a new story of a character, whose actions reveal the different roles in the pack. The author conveys the significance of leadership; and that by working together they can all accomplish one goal. The numerous twists of this book will keep kids reading and immersed in the action. Children's Literature - Barbara Monroe
This is the sixth book in the series “Wolves of the Beyond.” By the sixth book readers have come to know the characters and their predicament. However, if someone picked up this book first, they would not be disappointed or confused. The story is about a small band of creatures: eight wolves, three wolf pups, two bear cubs, and a Masked Owl, traveling across an ice bridge to a new land. It is a land they call the Distant Blue because it looks blue. This trip seems simple enough but, of course, it is not. This harrowing journey is filled with suspense, vivid imagery, and even a little magic. This diverse band travels through slippery passages, their claws digging deep into the ice for support. Over high ridges with winds so fierce it pushed one of the pups over the bridge and into the ice-cold water. The pup is saved, however, his personality and mannerisms are changed as he starts sleep walking and talking in rhymes. He reveals the world beneath the dark, cold water, adding an interesting dimension to the story. There is also an evil element, a rouge wolf pack whose leader wants to kill one of the wolves and take her pup. The story includes unusual words such as: skaarsgard, cleave hwlyn, lochinvyrr and skree, to name a few. Having a glossary might have helped but the context usually explains their meaning. A good captivating read. Reviewer: Barbara Monroe; Ages 9 to 11.
