Perfect for fans of the Warriors, Survivors, and Guardians of Ga'hoole series, this sequel to The Guardian Herd: Starfire, which Peter Lerangis called "an epic tale," will have readers eagerly turning the pages.

When Star received his powers on his first birthday, he became the most powerful pegasus in Anok. However, many were afraid to follow him, and felt safer staying with their over-stallions. The rest unified with Star and formed River Herd.

But now, not only does a horrible plague threaten the five herds, but Mountain Herd's over-stallion, Rockwing, has plans to kidnap Morningleaf, Star's closest companion, and take back Sky Meadow. Star begins to question his ability to keep his herd safe, especially with the threat of Nightwing the Destroyer's return. As much as Star wants to rely on his friends again for support, he's afraid of the starfire he's inherited. Star can heal, but he can also destroy. And the question is, will his dark powers overcome him?

Praise for The Guardian Herd: Starfire
    Peter Lerangis
From page one, Jennifer Lynn Alvarez weaves an epic tale of a doomed black Pegasus foal named Star, whose race against time will lift the reader on the wings of destiny and danger, magic and hope. IT’s a world I did not want to leave, and neither will you.
    VOYA, April 2015 (Vol. 38, No. 1) - Susan Redman-Parodi
The second installment in The Guardian Herd series, Stormbound continues the story of the Pegasi of Anok (mythical winged horses), which consist of five herds with their own territorial leader—the over-stallions—and their own land. Wars have been raging between these herds for hundreds of years, and Star, the black foal with tremendous power, head of the River Herd pack, wishes to unite them all. There are many forces against the Pegasi, including a deathly plague that has off killed hundreds and continues to threaten each herd with a violent, quick-spreading illness. A plot by over-stallion Rockwing to kidnap Morningleaf, Star’s yearling companion, in an effort to prevent Star from taking territory for his herd, forces Star to be on guard and protect his herd from an overtaking. The danger intensifies with the return of an old rival, who also possesses the starfire power and uses it for evil. Star struggles to use the enchantment he has been born with to balance the challenges and to use it for good; despite the struggle, he has to use his powers to destroy those who threaten the order he is trying to establish in the Anok valley. Filled with fantastical action, this at times violent rivalry is rich with description in a well-paced story that will leave the reader invested and absorbed in the story line. The conflict is well planned and dramatic and is felt very vividly by the reader. It is an engrossing story, one best suited for a reader who will not be intimidated by or fearful of the aggressive nature of the plot line. Alvarez has created a series that will be beloved by readers who gravitate toward the fantasy genre and have an interest in animal stories. This series will allow imaginations to soar like the Pegasus in flight. Reviewer: Susan Redman-Parodi; Ages 11 to 14.

Star, the most powerful pegasus in Anok, must learn to control his gift of starfire or risk succumbing to evil as his predecessor, Nightwing the Destroyer, did. Uneasy in his legacy and his role in the newly formed River Herd, Star must decide whether to follow the path of a healer and peacemaker or that of a warrior. When word of a plague sweeping the herds reaches the young pegasus, he offers to help. However, his compassion may be his undoing. He and his friends find themselves in the middle of a feud between the herds that may claim the lives of those Star holds most dear. When Star's closest friend, Morningleaf, is captured by Rockwing as part of his plot to claim the Sun Herd's land, it may be the death of the dream for unity among all of the herds. This epic adventure is filled with complicated ethical dilemmas and life-and-death choices. Fliers and walkers alike must decide between power and humility, bitterness and forgiveness, and war and peace. While this second installment is more richly developed than series opener Starfire (2014), it is still hobbled by a too-large cast with unnecessarily complicated names that have a tendency to run together: Rockwing, Grasswing and Nightwing, Hazelwind and Bumblewind, Echofrost and Frostfire, Darkleaf and Morningleaf—these are just a sampling. The compelling if formulaic plot is muddled by confusing nomenclature. (Fantasy. 8-12)
