In this sixth installment in his endlessly inventive series, Keys to the Kingdom, Nix sends his no-longer-quite-human hero, Arthur, the anointed Heir to the Kingdom, up against the great sorceress Superior Saturday. Complicating Arthur's quest to recover both the sixth part of the Architect's will and the sixth key to the Kingdom is his desire to return to Earth in time to prevent his home from being destroyed by a nuclear weapon. Although the dreaded Nothing has all but eliminated the Lower and Middle Houses of the Kingdom, Saturday has chosen to ignore its encroachment, preferring to concentrate her efforts on building an enormous tower that will allow her to storm the Incomparable Gardens, home of Lord Sunday, and challenge him for supreme power in what is left of the Kingdom. This effort allows Arthur, disguised as a Piper's Child, one of Saturday's human slaves, to make his way up the tower and infiltrate the army of Sorcerers brought together to attack Lord Sunday's realm. Obviously Nix's narrative has developed an extraordinarily complex backstory at this point, and new readers would be best advised to begin with the first book in the series, Mister Monday (Scholastic, 2003/VOYA February 2004). Those who have followed Nix this far, however, will find more than enough of the cockeyed word play, creative plotting, and general all-around strangeness that have made the books one of the most original fantasy series of the past decade. Book 6 of Garth Nix's futuristic fantasy series, "The Keys to the Kingdom," continues the adventures of its eleven-year-old hero Arthur Penhaligon. But having already collected five parts of the otherworldly Will as required, not to mention five keys from their haughty owners, Arthur's power level has escalated and he is no longer an eleven-year-old Earthly boy. Herein lies the rub. Besides shouldering the guilt for the House-led chaos punishing his family and friends on Earth, Arthur must steadily fight the loss of his mortal self in his alternate universe. Since he is now nearly as tall and strong as a Denizen of the House, Book 6 is less about Arthur's conquest of Superior Saturday than his constant struggle to overcome the nasty Denizen urges that are beginning to control him. Arthur's personal battle is played out against Nix's latest conceit: an Alphaville-like skyscraper of architecture gone wild and soulless. Saturday's tower endlessly rises from her realm toward the invasion level of Lord Sunday's private gardens, grinding its gears and swathed in incessant rain. In his miles-high office building from Hell, Nix presents a powerful image of despair. Only the seventh and last book can end the nightmare. Having already given us a brimstone-filled Lower Depths, is Nix creating a latter-day Divine Comedy? Gosh, Garth. Can there be Hope? Reviewer: Kathleen Karr

Sixth in Nix's The Keys to the Kingdom series, Superior Saturday continues the unlikely heroism of Arthur Penhaligan, formerly an asthmatic boy, now a golden-blooded Denizen. As he struggles to maintain his human compassion in the face of increasing magical powers, he must stop time and find the Sixth Key before his home city is nuked by Nothings. Superior Saturday will keep young fantasy lovers in constant suspense as Nix combines adventure with a far-reaching imagination. The entire construct of the Upper House built from open cubicles of red iron reaching ever higher as Saturday attempts to break through the floor of the Incomparable Gardens suggests more than just a story. Nix definitely lives up to his reputation as winner of the Aurealis Awards for Best Fantasy Novel, Best Young Adult Novel, and Best Children's Novel. Reviewer: Judy Beemer

The sixth title (Scholastic, 2008) in Garth Nix's series begins with Arthur Penhaligon's asthma attack that results in his being taken to the Lower House, which is the center of all Universes. He is then declared Heir to the Kingdom and must wrest the Keys to the Kingdom from the Architect's appointed Trustees who are no longer loyal. Arthur has successfully defeated five of the Trustees, gaining dominion over all of the Lower House, the Far Reaches, the Border Sea, the Great Maze, and the Middle House. In doing so, he has become more Denizen than human and fears that he will never be able to go home upon completing his destined path in the House. Arthur is faced with simultaneous attacks in both the House and his own world, as Superior Saturday schemes to defeat him and become Denizen of all Universes. His home is beset by a nuclear attack while the Lower House is destroyed by a giant wave of Nothing. Arthur mounts an attack to take the Upper House from Superior Saturday. The novel ends with a real cliffhanger. Allan Corduner gives all the characters distinct voices. Listeners will be enthralled and eagerly await the final volume in the series. A good addition to school and public library collections.-Jessica Miller, New Britain Public Library, CT
