    Wendy Higgins is the author of Sweet Evil and Sweet Peril, the first two books in the trilogy, as well as Flirting with Maybe. She was born an Army brat and spent her childhood moving across the US, finally settling in the Washington, DC, area. She attended George Mason University for her undergraduate degree in creative writing, and Radford University for a masters in curriculum and instruction. Wendy taught high school English before achieving her dream of becoming a full-time author. She now lives in northern Virginia with her husband, daughter, and son.

    Anna can see people's colors (auras and moods); she can hear up to a mile away and smell pancakes cooking on the next block. She does not drink, is waiting to have sex until marriage, and does not lie. Anna is the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon. Her angelic side may have more control, but once she meets Kaiden, the son of another demon, she is thrown into the world of the Nephilim, the children of demons, where survival depends upon embracing vice. Nephilim are expected to "work" to spread sin; those who do not are killed by their fathers, and they are certainly not allowed to have feelings for one another. One hundred percent fantasy and romance, Sweet Evil follows the current formula set forth by Twilight. Kaiden introduces Anna to the world of the Nephilim and refuses to be with her to protect them both; she becomes depressed in response, and a second, safe love interest is introduced. The book, however, is well written and enticing. Paranormal romance fans will line up to read it. One steamy encounter, the Nephilim's assignments, and encounters with demons make this book more appropriate for a mature reader, as allusions to sex, drinking, and drugs abound. Though the ending is a bit unbelievable, even by supernatural standards, it will draw readers back for the remainder of the Sweet Trilogy. Reviewer: Katie Sadowski

    Anna lives with her adoptive mom, Patti. She has always had questions about who her biological parents. She has a crazy memory that dates back to when she was in her mother's stomach. She remembers being born. She remembers a nun delivering her. She remembers her mother dying in childbirth and she remembers her dad's arrest for drug trafficking. Fast forward sixteen, question-filled years and Anna's best friend, Jay, introduces her to this charismatic rock star named Kaidan Rowe. She and Kaidan share a special bond. Kaidan explains to her that they are both Nephilim. Usually Nephilim are the children of a heavenly angel or a fallen angel/demon and a human. The difference is that Anna's mother wasn't human, she was a heavenly angel. Kaidan's father is Pharzuph, the Duke of lust. Anna's dad is Belial, the Duke of substance abuse. Nephilin are born to help their fathers in whatever type of "bad influence" they bring to earth. Since her father has been in prison all her life, Anna has always embraced her good side, but now Kaidan brings out the "bad girl" in her. Nephilim can never be more than friends, but this doesn't stop Anna from falling in love with Kaidan when he takes her on a cross country road trip to meet the nun who delivered her and finally meet her father. Answers bring other questions for Anna that dip into religious beliefs but do not require the reader to be anything more than a person who enjoys a good relationship drama. The ending is open, allowing for other books to follow. I look forward to finding out if Anna and Kaidan's relationship can possibly work against all the odds on earth and in heaven.     Gr 8–10—Anna, a studious adoptee, learns her true origin as the forbidden daughter of a fallen and a guardian angel when she meets Kaidan, drummer for the band Lascivious and son of the Duke of Lust. Her ability to read the emotional states of other humans by their colorful auras sets her apart from other teens; it is by her own aura that Kaidan recognizes her. Higgins's world-building includes Nephilim (children of fallen angels), angels of light, and enough convenient plotting to strain the credibility of even devoted genre readers. Kaidan drives the virginal Anna from Atlanta to California to meet her father and Sister Ruth, the dying nun who arranged Anna's adoption. The road trip is fraught with sexual tension as well as revelations about the demon world as Kaidan attempts to both seduce and educate the 16-year-old. Anna's father, Belial, the Duke of Substance Abuse (the Dukes of Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, etc., are fallen angels and the devil's chief minions on Earth), has been in jail since her birth. When she finally visits him, he reveals himself as loving father and regretful angelic rebel. He is determined to train her so that she can survive-and perhaps topple-the hierarchy of demons that influences human behavior. There are moments of action and sexual intensity here but most of this lengthy novel is a setup that introduces the logistics of demon/angel/human interaction, the key players in the heavily foreshadowed drama, and the religious philosophy that underpins the plot.
