This account is written by the famous private detective of this era Allan Pinkerton, which among other things, uncovered the first plot to assassinate the newly elected President Lincoln as he arrived in Baltimore on his way to the White House.

This book is controversial and has sparked many disagreements among historians, but no one can deny it is a good read, which really gives you a feel for the mindset during the "Rebellion," or Civil War as it is known today.

The book also explores the entire spy system set up by the North to keep tabs on the Southland and ultimately lead it to victory.
