Born into a Jewish family in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) was deeply impacted by the Anti-Semitism of the Dreyfuss Affair (1894) which led him to consider the necessity of a Jewish state outside of Europe as a solution to the problems of discrimination and anti-Semitism faced by Jews in Europe.
