Originally meant to be a travel guide for tourists, Three Men in a Boat is generally accepted as a humorous work because of the amusing stories the three men tell while traveling along the Thames. The book was in fact an excellent guide at the time and continues to be today since many of the establishments mentioned are still present. Unintentionally, Jerome's work has grown from a simple tourist guide to a perpetually humorous British classic.
