George Augustus Moore (1852-1933) was a pioneering modern Irish writer. He had to fight against censorship early in his career. Despite the powerful forces arrayed against him, Moore succeeded in establishing realism as a legitimate literary mode.  His best-known novels include A Mummer's Wife (1885) and Esther Waters (1894).

This 1891 novel was greatly admired by James Joyce. Hubert Price, a struggling young playwright with one moderate success under his belt, is bequeathed a legacy by his uncle.  His focus on repeating his theatrical success, and his love for the beautiful Julia, blinds him to the tragic, obsessive love of his disinherited cousin, Emily.
