By taking his title from the message flashed to the crippled light cruiser Houston by the fleet tug Pawnee off the coast of Formosa during the closing months of World War II and writing from the perspective of enlisted crewman, Mason ( Battleship Sailor, LJ 9/1/82) once again concentrates on average people in naval history. No glamorous battleship or aircraft carrier duty here, but simply the everyday life on a fleet tug and the feelings, hopes, and fears of sailors as they try to survive Pacific naval warfare. Those who think naval history is only about famous warships and their admirals will be pleased with this history of service on a fleet tug. Part of an excellent series, this is highly recommended for both academic and larger public libraries.-- Harold N. Boyer, Marple P.L., Broomall, Pa.

The U.S.S. Pawnee belonged to the class of fleet tugs designed for deep-sea towing, salvage and firefighting during WWII. This is Mason's first-hand account of being a sailor during the Pacific war. No bibliography or index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
