Children's Literature - Susan Borges
This wonderful book will teach children about the amazing variety of feet found on different animals of the world. The organization, layout, and pictures of this engaging nonfiction text help to make the interesting content very understandable for young readers of many different reading abilities. Each two page spread focuses on a specific animal. There is an up-close photograph of that animal and an illustration that depicts a child with feet as seen on that animal. For example, beside the photograph of a platypus propelling himself under water by the use of his webbed feet, there is a whimsical illustration of a young girl swimming under water and her duck billed platypus feet are making her swim through the water at top speed. There is a fun fact side bar as well as a paragraph of text, which describes how the platypus’s webbed feet are uniquely designed to allow the platypus to scratch, dig, or swim. The last two pages of this book explain what is special about human feet and how to keep your feet healthy. This engaging informative nonfiction text can be enjoyed by elementary school-aged children in or out of the classroom and with or without an adult reading partner. After reading this text, children will be eager to read the other titles in this wonderful “What if” nonfiction series. Reviewer: Susan Borges; Ages 4 to 9.
