Have you ever noticed how pirates use a spyglass to focus in on other ships or land in the distance? While they focus in on small things in the distance, they miss seeing other things around them. Sometimes they miss having fun. Sometimes they miss the beautiful treasure they already have! Just like a pirate using a spyglass, kids may focus in on one thing that they want, and not notice all the good things they already have. If you're a kid who thinks "it's not fair," this book is for you! What to Do When It's Not Fair guides children and their parents through the difficult emotions of envy and jealousy using strategies and techniques based on cognitive behavioral principles. This interactive self-help book is the complete resource for educating, motivating, and empowering children to cope with envy so they can sail the high seas with pleasure! This book is part of the Magination Press What-to-Do Guides for Kidsr series

Every child experiences envy or jealousy of some kind. He may envy a toy or game that another child has. He may be jealous because a sibling gets to do something he does not get to do or the sibling gets an item he does not. Maybe a classmate has the shoes he has been asking for. Or a classmate gets the teacher’s attention he desires. This interactive book addresses such envy and jealousy issues. Most children believe that they are treated unfairly when these previously named situations happen to them. They may get angry, cry, sulk, or scream out “It’s NOT fair!” This educational book teaches children how to deal with their envy and jealousy. They will learn how to recognize what triggers their envy or jealousy. They will be taught to focus on all the good they have, instead of what they do not have. In addition, they will be shown how to refocus their thoughts. For example, there are “now thoughts”- is this situation only temporary, or “forever thoughts”- is this situation going to be forever. Children will also learn how to change their “every time” thoughts to “this time” thoughts. Redirecting children’s thought patterns will help them to see that their situation can be different; especially because of the way they think. Children will enjoy the activities and pictures in this fun book. Also included are exercises children can do to calm down and a certificate for the completion of this book. Parents and school guidance counselors will find this book useful in working with children dealing with envy and jealousy issues. This enriching book is part of the “What-to-Do Guides for Kids” series. Reviewer: Cathi I. White; Ages 6 to 12.

Gr 1–4—This kid-friendly text uses pirates to help readers understand the concepts of envy and jealousy. The book begins with an introduction for parents and caregivers and has 10 chapters designed to help children comprehend the different faces of these emotions. For example, "Lighten Your Load" explains the concept of "every time" thoughts ("Every time there is an award Joe gets it") and encourages youngsters to lighten their loads by changing their thoughts to "This Time" thoughts ("Mrs. Jones thinks Joe did a great job today"). The text does not belittle or minimize the reality of these feelings. Activities appear in every chapter and include making a spyglass, creating a list of envy triggers, and practicing yoga to release stress. The black-and-white illustrations and spot-on text in the thought and speech bubbles combine to create an appealing volume. The author successfully incorporates examples that will ring true with the intended audience, making this book valuable for home and school use.—Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, AL
