Snow doesn’t just transform the landscape, it can also open a window into majestic, imaginative territory—just like reading a special book. Following footsteps in the snow-covered ground, a boy marches into a world of snowcapped mountains where children ride on the backs of wolves and polar bears, continuing on to the “place where the snowmen live” and through a “gloomy forest” where he meets the “Queen of the Poles,” fairies, and elves. Newcomer Collingridge’s paintings are sumptuous and absorbing, creating a genuine sense of magic. And, as the final scene makes clear, it’s a kind of magic that any reader can access: “And I can go there every day... because my favorite book takes me there.” Ages 3–6. (Aug.)
    From the Publisher
In his first picture book…Richard Collingridge dives headlong into a fantasy of the season, showing it to be a vast and mountainous expanse of white, both eerie and enchanting.” —The New York Times

“A picture book debut that features not only an eery ode to mega-snow and various large icy creatures, but also a good word at the end for reading itself.” —The Associated Press

“Newcomer Collingridge's paintings are sumptuous and absorbing, creating a genuine sense of magic. And, as the final scene makes clear, it's a kind of magic that any reader can access: 'And I can go there every day... because my favorite book takes me there.'” —Publishers Weekly

“The magic of reading is the inspiration for this stunningly illustrated debut in which a little boy takes a long and eventful journey across a snow-bound imaginative landscape. The dream-like style of illustration makes this the perfect book for snuggling up with on dark wintry nights—Collingridge is clearly a major talent to look out for in the future.” —The Daily Mail (UK)

    Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
A child’s imagination can make the most preposterous things seem simple and real. The young child in our story tells the reader about what it is like when it snows. He tells us, as he carries his bear under his arm, that when it snows things disappear. Things like trains and cars and streets are covered in snow and no longer visible. In his imagination, other modes of transportation appear, including puppy dogs, sleds, polar bears, and skis. These new “vehicles” take him to the land where the snowmen live. There, he meets the Queen of the Poles. The Queen shows him tiny fairies that fly and light up in the night. With her, he sees thousands of elves and magical creatures that look a lot like reindeer. He even sees a little old man in a red suit with a white beard. The young man tells us that the best part of this adventure is that he can come here every day, anytime he wants to come. This is the land of his favorite book; anytime he takes up the book and reads, he can go to his magical place and see the elves and the fairies. Author/illustrator Collingridge, in this his picture book debut, has presented page after page of magical places for young readers to see. From the footprints in the snow to the twinkling lights in the forest, readers will be reminded that there is so much they can explore in the pages of a book. This is a great story for a read aloud with a discussion about favorite books and remembered characters. Grandparents can use this read aloud opportunity to share their love of reading and their favorite books. Reviewer: Joyce Rice; Ages 5 to 7.
