A child’s imagination can make the most preposterous things seem simple and real. The young child in our story tells the reader about what it is like when it snows. He tells us, as he carries his bear under his arm, that when it snows things disappear. Things like trains and cars and streets are covered in snow and no longer visible. In his imagination, other modes of transportation appear, including puppy dogs, sleds, polar bears, and skis. These new “vehicles” take him to the land where the snowmen live. There, he meets the Queen of the Poles. The Queen shows him tiny fairies that fly and light up in the night. With her, he sees thousands of elves and magical creatures that look a lot like reindeer. He even sees a little old man in a red suit with a white beard. The young man tells us that the best part of this adventure is that he can come here every day, anytime he wants to come. This is the land of his favorite book; anytime he takes up the book and reads, he can go to his magical place and see the elves and the fairies. Author/illustrator Collingridge, in this his picture book debut, has presented page after page of magical places for young readers to see. From the footprints in the snow to the twinkling lights in the forest, readers will be reminded that there is so much they can explore in the pages of a book.
