After adopting an orphan human boy, the First Herd is finally ready to make the treacherous journey across the mountains to find the Sweet Grass that promises survival. But when their leader, Estrella, is captured by cruel men, it delivers a blow to the very heart of the herd. If the horses turn back, they'll never make it across the mountains before winter. But if they leave Estrella in captivity, the wild-born filly will surely perish. This conclusion to Kathryn Lasky's Horses of the Dawn trilogy will make your heart beat to the rhythm of thundering hooves, leaving you breathless as you join the herd's final fight for freedom.

"As in works such as her Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, Lasky uses animals to touch on very human issues . . . the cost of freedom and the adversity that comes with the pursuit of one's dreams." – Kirkus Reviews on Horses of the Dawn Book 1: The Escape

    Children's Literature - Katie Engen
High drama gallops across every page of this final entry in the “Horses of the Dawn” trilogy. Told through the thoughts and conversations of the herd’s leader, Estrella, readers couldn’t get any closer to a horse, even by riding one. Love for horses will carry most readers through this complicated-to-convoluted plot. Estrella must lead her loyal herd across the plains to lands beyond human reach. Cruel Spanish explorers, led by an especially driven madman named El Miedo, pursue them. El Miedo has mastered a small-minded but powerful captive steed savvy to Estrella’s ways. Estrella has one human friend, Tijo, whom she helped escape his human captors. Their bond helps Tijo meld seamlessly into the herd’s ways. Haru, a grandmotherly spirit who lodges in animals, had helped Tijo survive and now helps Estrella lead the escape. The elements and distance are hard enough to survive, but some long-abused, newly escaped equines unaccustomed to travel also impede progress. So while Haru’s advice is correct, with an overabundance of caution for the enfeebled members of the herd, Estrella ignores Haru at a critical point. Little Coyote, yet another creature treated very badly in his past, is drawn to Estrella’s quest and eventually helps the others while discovering he is worthy and appreciated. An additional spirit that only Estrella can see intermittently helps the young mare navigate the escape route. Yet it takes a shocking, self-sacrificing decision by El Miedo’s horse to finally open the way so Tijo, Little Coyote, and the horses and mules following Estrella can work together to regain confidence and escape to true freedom. This tense, drama-laden fantasy is nicely leavened by Lasky’s adept and consistent use of germane facts, like geographical terms, proper plant names, and correct equine vocabulary. Youngsters who relate to horses will love reading their way into Estrella’s herd. Reviewer: Katie Engen; Ages 8 to 12.
