Edward Augustus Freeman (1823-1892) was an English writer and historian. He is best known for his monumental, meticulously researched History of the Norman Conquest (1867-1876). While his professional standing remains high, his reputation today has been marred by his aggressive racism that was virulent even for its own time.

Published in 1888, this slim biography of William the Conqueror inaugurated the Twelve English Statesmen series. As Freeman notes in his Preface: "There is perhaps no man before or after him whose personal character and personal will have had so direct an effect on the . . . laws and constitution of England."
