Gr 5–8—An old ski resort in Slovakia is the film location for a sci-fi movie in which three children are the first humans to return to a frozen postapocalyptic Earth. Fourteen-year-old Stefan, thirteen-year-old Raine, and nine-year-old-old Jeremy play siblings who have left their parents to come back to a forsaken world with only pet wolves for protection. On an evening when much of the crew, the director, and their tutor have gone to town, a snowstorm triggers an avalanche and buries the lodge with snow. Caught outside, the three youngsters scramble to locate one another. Raine, once a spoiled diva who rubbed everyone the wrong way, saves Stefan's life and displays the moxie needed to survive in the cold. They uncover Jeremy and a badly injured adult actor and seek shelter in the prop and costume trailers. Pet wolves Boris and Phoebe play a role in keeping wild wolves at bay while Stefan and Raine make an unsuccessful trek to seek help. Resourceful use of mechanical prop sleds eventually leads to a rescue for an upbeat ending. Stefan has finally landed his first major acting role. Unfortunately, the film he is starring in is being filmed in the dead of winter in wolf-ridden Slovakia. At first things are great; the costumes and props for this sci-fi movie are fun and exciting and the wolves that are co-starring are friendly but intriguing. However, Stefan is having trouble proving himself to infamous Raine, who does not keep her dislike of Stefan a secret. After a miserable day of shooting, and an impending blizzard, filming stops for the day. Most of the crew takes off for town, leaving the stars at the barely-livable ski lodge where they are both living and filming. Tired and embarrassed, Stefan retreats to his room and falls into a fitful sleep. Hours later, at dinner time, Stefan wakes to a power loss, and trudges down to the dining room to find out what's going on. Not worried, the four actors attempt to brave the night, until they hear the movie wolves howling in their trailer outside. Concerned about their co-stars, Stefan and young Jeremy venture out into the storm. In the morning, in desperate need of wood and supplies, the children venture out into the snow, creating a raucous. Situated at the bottom of a mountain, the noise creates a terrible avalanche, which destroys the lodge, leaving the stars without shelter. Now, in a real fight for their lives, the children must care for their injured adult-costar and their wolf friends. However, their every moved is watched by the wild wolves, who quickly make themselves known to the group, making the movie stars' situation even more dire. A captivating read, this novel is ideal for reluctant readers and a male protagonist turns this already high-interest book into the perfect novel for any teenage boy. Reviewer: Maggie L. Stefan is offered the opportunity of a lifetime: He is starring in a science fiction movie with elite but snarky movie star Raine Randolph. On location in Slovakia, he tries to shine in his new role and connect with the cast, even the wolves, but it is not easy. One careless mistake after another causes his confidence to plummet. After a long day of filming that ends in one of the wolves being injured because of Stefan, the crew goes into town, and Stefan wonders if he will ever stop making mistakes. He gets his chance to prove himself in a real-life drama when, along with Raine and the other child star, Jeremy, he manages to survive a snowstorm and live among both wild and domesticated wolves. While the characters are relatable, they are also typical. Raine is the overdemanding actress, while Stefan is the inept, clumsy character who must discover his true potential. Wolf Storm has everything an avid adventure reader has come to expect: a suspenseful plot fueled by a convincing person-against-nature conflict, tension between characters, and a realistically described setting that allows for repeated challenges the main characters must overcome.
