    Children's Literature - Linda Sweitzer
What would bring five unrelated kids to Larkspur mansion? It is not their backgrounds. Poppy is an orphan from the girls’ group home Thursday’s Hope; twins Dylan and Dash are stars of a hit television show; Marcus is a music prodigy; and Azumi is just trying to forget about the death of her older sister, Moriko. Larkspur becomes hope for what each of them needs the most: a family, a new movie role, a music school, or a distraction. But it is something unholy that has brought them together, and it will not let them leave. As they search for a way out, hope becomes lost. In this second issue of the “Shadow House” series, Poblocki, master of the macabre for young readers, continues his unique storytelling about the trapped quintet as it continues its very long day of trying to escape from the mansion. The unlikely troupe becomes separated (Poppy with Marcus, Dash with Azumi, and Dylan on his own) and chased by what still “lives” there. As each group fights back against the house, they not only learn about what Larkspur had been and now is, but also that each of these new visitors has another strange story as to how and why they came to be there. That sows the seeds of distrust that could keep them and the other “inhabitants” of the house prisoners forever, or worse. It is important to read the series in order as each issue builds on the next and cannot be read as a stand-alone. Those looking for more of that Poblocki chill thrill can download the free app that allows readers to experience Larkspur further by unlocking other story segments not in the book. Reviewer: Linda Sweitzer; Ages 8 to 12.
