Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Children learn about the steps in the food-production cycle in these colorful titles. Chocolate explains how cocoa beans grow and are harvested, roasted, and made into chocolate. Peanut Butter describes the processes involved in harvesting, shelling, cooking, and crushing peanut plants to make peanut butter. In Milk, readers learn about what cows eat and how they are milked, and then how the milk is pasteurized for safe drinking. Ice Cream explains that milk is made into a mix with added flavorings to become ice cream. Each book contains a table of contents with the steps listed in the food production. Each spread is clearly organized by the introduction of a specific step and then followed by short sentences to provide additional explanations. A color photograph on the opposite page offers visual clues. Vocabulary words are in bold and are defined in a glossary at the end of each book. A perfect way for youngsters to get their first glimpse at how familiar foods are produced for consumption." --School Library Journal

Children's Literature - Beverly Melasi

Ice cold, refreshing ice cream! Delicious alone, or with several toppings at a time, ice cream is everybody's favorite dessert. But how is it made? Ice cream is made from milk. A farmer milks the cows. The milk flows through tubes into a tank where it is cooled. Trucks take the tanks to an ice cream factory. The milk is cleaned and tested, then put into a vat. Sugar is added to make the milk sweet. The ice cream mix is heated to kill germs, then cooled. Flavors like chocolate and strawberry are added. Air is stirred in to make the soft ice cream fluffy. The ice cream is squirted into boxes, then put into a deep freeze to make it hard and ready to ship to stores. The author did a great job of using pictures and words in easy-to-read sentences, making this book a fun read. Parents and children can read it together. The child can study the pictures, while the parent reads, or they can take turns reading and looking at the pictures: either way, it is a great way to learn something new. The color layouts inside the book are vivid, and the pictures are large. Reviewer: Beverly Melasi
