Description: An annual publication on recent trends in libraries, this volume concentrates expectedly on the impact of electronic resources and technology on libraries internationally. The chapters are heavily footnoted and serve largely as bibliographic essays.
Purpose: The series is meant to give a yearly overview of important areas of innovation and change in libraries. This volume examines technology in a variety of different settings in several different countries. The book is a good indication of what has been under development over the past several years and is now ready for presentation. Unfortunately, technology changes rapidly, as do government priorities, making the book a little out of date at publication.
Audience: The series is aimed at librarians interested in what's new and what's happening around the world, particularly those who are looking to implement projects and administer change. Long edited by Irene Godden of Colorado State, Frederick Lynden has held the editorship for the last few years. Active in ALA's International Relations Roundtable, Lynden's interests are mainly in collection development and he currently is the director of scholarly communications and library research at Brown University.
Features: The essays cover a wide range of topics from evaluation methodologies to the newest reformulation of bibliographic instruction under the rubric of information literacy. Rare books departments, academic and public libraries are examined historically and for their current role in Britain, Denmark and Russia. The Russian article contains a quite a bit of hyperbole and is scattered with sentences like "[Russia] enjoys an unlimited freedom the press..." which in light of recent public television station suppression on the part of the Russian government must be questioned. Most likely, the Russian Minister of Culture could write a new article every year with a new state of the union introduction.
Assessment: These essays are wonderful starting points for further investigation into a variety of library topics. The chapters are well-referenced and internationally focused but follow the usual "how we done good" format. An expensive resource albeit well respected for years.
