Description: Dr. Sataloff offers a dynamic and engaging journey through multifaceted procedural diagnostics including perceptual, medical (invasive, non-invasive, as well as technology and instrumentation centered), and etiology-based approaches. Unique to this book is the clear, cohesive, and functional marriage of theory and practice.
Purpose: The purpose is "to make relevant information available to students in a convenient and affordable form, suitable for classroom use as well as for reference."
Audience: According to the author, the book is intended for students. This is an excellent reference for anyone in the field of voice.
Features: This book covers all aspects of diagnosis of voice disorders from several perspectives: medical, perceptual, measurable sign-symptoms, technologically assisted, and etiology. What I loved about the book was that, although all information was familiar to me, the author combined research and theoretical constructs with the expected behavioral signs and symptoms: giving a third dimension to one-dimensional information and giving life to theory. The photographs are clear and appropriate.
Assessment: Nothing in the field compares with this book. So often, the medical approach (cut first, talk later) is proselytized during conferences. For years, I've found a variety of laryngeal pathologies that were therapeutically treatable without surgery. Dr. Sataloff is the first physician I have read who seems to respect the special contribution of the speech pathologist to voice intervention. Other books (and I have read just about all of them) become so overburdened with research, anatomy, and technology that they lose sight of the capability of behavioral intervention. Dr. Sataloff has presented the field with an in-depth, cogent, readable — even enjoyably readable — work. It struck me repeatedly how perfect this book was for students — and this was before I read the preface!
