Hey! Want to play?

Oops. I mean, want to play when I'm done with time-out?

I sort of kind of got in some trouble again.

'Cause I sort of kind of borrowed somebody's dog.

I only borrowed him so I could win a trophy.

A shiny, sparkly, silver trophy.

You've probably borrowed a dog before, right?

A cat? A gerbil? A tarantula?

Oh. Well, I had my reasons.

It's a long story, actually.

Usually when I end up in time-out, there's a long story to tell.

And since you're here anyway, I'll bet you'd like to hear it. . . .

In this third iteration of Roscoe Riley tales, Roscoe discovers that some things are precious, whether it is a handmade sweater or a goofy dog. Roscoe wants more than anything else to win a trophy like his younger sister, the super achiever. He even tries trading his grandmother-made, personalized sweater for the use of a new friend's dog. Edward, the dog, has been taught a great trick; when a picture book is set before him, he appears to be reading it. Roscoe thinks this trick will win him a trophy at the Truly Terrific Trick Contest. Of course, Roscoe learns the value of his possessions and must make amends in the end. Told in simple language with black and white line drawings, the text is engaging enough to catch the interest of those in-between readers who are not entirely ready for chapter books. While not quite the caliber of the "Junie B. Jones" series, this does have the advantage of being told with correct grammar. Reviewer: Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
