Overview

Julie (Jeanne Moreau) is the young widow who seeks revenge for the death of her husband. She targets her victims for demise and sets out to knock them off one by one. The first victim is pushed from a balcony, the second is poisoned in his own home. She poses as Diane the Huntress and shoots the artist with her bow and arrow. A pretentious man is locked in a closet and sealed off to die. Julie willfully confesses her murders to a priest who is helpless to break the silence by his religious vows of the sanctity of confession. When the last man is found to be locked in jail, Julie conspires to get herself arrested to gain access to the unfortunate prisoner.

Based on a 1940s novel by Rear Window author Cornell Woolrich, The Bride Wore Black is French director François Truffaut's most direct -- and successful -- homage to his favorite filmmaker, Alfred Hitchcock. After a bridegroom is shot leaving the church on his wedding day, his unhinged widow (Jeanne Moreau) goes underground, traces the group responsible, and eliminates them one by one. Truffaut's stylish thriller appropriates many of the Master's cinematic devices and even sports a score by one of Hitchcock's favorite composers, Bernard Herrmann (Psycho). While episodic and occasionally implausible, Bride sustains suspense throughout and benefits from inspired use of glossy locales and splendid cameo performances from the actors who play Moreau's victims -- including renowned leading men Jean-Claude Brialy and Michel Bouquet. The haughty Moreau makes a beautiful avenging angel, and her carefully calibrated performance enables Truffaut to transcend the pulp-fictional conventions of Woolrich's story. Cinematographer Raoul Coutard's primary color scheme really shimmers on the DVD edition.
