Description: True to its title, this is a comprehensive yet brief review of perioperative thoracic anesthesia care. Preoperative patient evaluation to postoperative management is covered in a stepwise fashion.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide broad-spectrum, readily available, practical information to general anesthesiologists who only occasionally do thoracic cases as well as introductory information to anesthesia residents starting their thoracic rotation.
Audience: The target audience includes anesthesiologists who don't routinely do thoracic cases and anesthesia residents. The editor and contributors are experienced clinicians from a busy surgical program whose clinical pearls, shared throughout the book, speak volumes about their authority.
Features: The book is quite comprehensive in the breadth of topics it covers in five orderly sections. Part I covers pulmonary physiology, one lung ventilation, the interaction of anesthetics and lung physiology, as well the pathophysiology of diseased lungs. Part II explains the practical aspects of thoracic anesthesia like patient positioning, different ways to isolate lungs, and different airway devices. Part III details the basic overriding principles of anesthetic and surgical management in thoracic surgery. Part IV covers commonly performed surgical procedures, describing both the anesthetic and surgical considerations and outlining the practical steps to deal with them. The last part reviews postoperative pain management options. The book stands out on account of its unique approach. Every topic is discussed from a practical standpoint, covering common problems that arise and providing solutions. Chapters are brief, to the point, and well illustrated. The focus is on the issues relevant to the conduct of anesthesia rather than on the theory of anesthesia.
Assessment: This is not a textbook of anesthesia and does not replace one, but it does what no other book does — provides real life information on thoracic anesthesia and demystifies lung isolation techniques in thoracic surgery. It's a must read for all anesthesia residents and a must have for general anesthesiologists who may end up doing a complicated thoracic case while on call.
