Purpose: The purpose of the second edition is to make information on voice science and vocal pedagogy accessible to students with an interest in speech-language pathology as well as professional voice care. This edition provides information that is appropriate for students and teachers across several different disciplines who are part of the voice care team.
Audience: The target audience is multidisciplinary, and includes students, speech-language pathologists, singing and acting voice specialists, otolaryngologists, and other members of the voice care team. As an expert otolaryngologist with a longstanding specialty focus in care of the professional voice, Dr. Sataloff is ideally suited to compile and edit a comprehensive resource to guide students and instructors on the art of professional voice care.
Features: The book presents a comprehensive discussion of the anatomy and physiology of voice, an overview of the basic physics of sound and the dynamics of laryngeal function, and an integrative approach to voice evaluation with an emphasis on the unique aspects of caring for the professional voice. Figures and photos are particularly helpful in depicting laryngeal anatomy and function. This book presents unique perspectives on and resources for caring for the singing and acting voice, serving as an excellent complement to other voice science texts. Specific considerations for evaluating the singing and acting voice, such as performance conditions, exposure to environmental irritants, warm-up and cool-down regimens, and schedule and travel demands are highlighted in the discussion of voice evaluation.
