Alex Anderson's love of quilting all began in 1978 when she completed her Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilt as a part of her work towards her degree in art from San Francisco State University. Over the years, her central focus has been to understand fabric relationships and to develop an intense appreciation of traditional quilts and beautiful quilting surface design.

Alex is the author of 30 books with C&T Publishing, in four languages, selling near 1 million copies worldwide. Her quilts and instruction tips have also appeared in numerous magazines. She is the National Spokesperson for Bernina of America, a promotional partner for AccuQuilt's GO!, as well as a designer of her own line of fabrics with P&B Textiles, and threads with Superior Threads. For 11 years, she served as host of Simply Quilts on HGTV. Alex continues to be one of the most sought-after instructors and lecturers in the international quilting and sewing industry.

Alex is a founding partner of The Quilt Show.com and The Quilt Life Magazine (published by AQS) with Ricky Tims. The Quilt Show is the world's first full-service interactive online video/web TV programming created just for quilters. With over 120,000+ registered members in over 100 countries, The Quilt Show.com's mission is to educate, inspire, entertain, connect and grow the world quilting community in a fun, positive and interactive environment. The Quilt Life Magazine is a bimonthly magazine dedicated to celebrating the lifestyle of today's quiltmaker in a fresh and beautiful format.

Alex was chosen as the 2008 Silver Star Award winner, an annual recognition by the International Quilt Festival to a quilter "whose work and influence has made -- and continues to make -- a sizable and positive impact on the quilting industry and community."

Alex was also chosen by the readers of Quilter's Newsletter magazine (Feb 2009) as "The Most Influential Person in The Quilting Industry" (in a three-way tie with Ricky Tims and Karey Bresenhan of Quilts, Inc).

Alex's personal mission is not only to share her love of quilting with anyone who will listen, but to educate and encourage those interested in quilting as clearly and simply as possible, so quilting can continue to be handed down from generation to generation.

Alex has two children and lives in Northern California with her husband.

This is one of those books every quilter should have in their quilting library. It is not being released until after I submit this article to my editor, I do not own it, but I do have something every similar in my reference materials. It is a go-to book when you are trying to remember something not necessarily new, but you have not done before, or you need to refresh your memory. Even with my experience, I still refer to my book. Alex's book will have the advantage that it is brand new, so products mentioned are current. The pictures included are wonderful, if not inspiring! This book is a complete quilt-making class from beginning to end.

March 2016 British Patchwork & Quilting
This is a comprehensive introduction to patchwork and quilting. It begins with the anatomy of a quilt, terms such as block, pieced and sashing are explained. It progresses through equipment, fabric and drafting patterns to binding and adding a label. The advice for rotary cutting and piecing is given clearly. It is well illustrated with photos. There are no instructions for blocks but there are techniques for tricky Y seams and curves. Quilting, both hand and machine, are explained well. In fact it is almost impossible to find any areas that are not covered. It is an encyclopaedia of patchwork and quilting. It is my Book of the Month.

Prolific quilter and TV host Anderson (Scrap Quilting with Alex Anderson) has been quilting for over 35 years, and her expertise shines in this extensive guide to the quilt making process. All of the basics are included, such as supply and fabric selection, tips for cutting and piecing, and instructions for quilting and binding. Anderson also includes in-depth explorations of pen-and-paper quilt block drafting and the mathematics of quilting—topics that are rarely covered in most foundational quilt making books but are essential for those interested in turning their ideas into physical items. Instructions for appliqué, hand-quilting, and hand-piecing are also included, and these slow-sewing techniques are experiencing a renaissance as the contemporary quilting boom moves beyond the essentials. Overall, it's like taking a master class from an expert quilter who not only knows the material but understands the best way to teach others. VERDICT This thorough yet not overwhelming guide is ideal for novices, but experienced quilters will find it a useful reference as well.
