J. M. Barrie (1860-1937) was a Scottish author and playwright. He was involved in the early twentieth-century attempts to overcome state censorship of the arts. Drawing inspiration from the Lewely Davies family (who had five boys), Barrie is best known as the creator of Peter Pan, the boy who wouldn't grow up.

This early (1888) work of fiction by the creator of Peter Pan is based on newspaper sketches about small-town life in Scotland. Barrie also drew on his mother’s stories about her home town. He published two more books in this series, A Window in Thrums (1889) and The Little Minister (1891).
