The New York Times Book Review - Jenny Rosenstrach
It's impossible not to be charmed by the chatty Tosi and her hot pink and bubble-letter-filled never-never land…Unlike Tosi's first book, Momofuku Milk Bar, this new one…doesn't have you chasing down glucose to make birthday cake frosting. "The best stuff," Tosi makes clear in a chapter called "Hand-Me-Downs," is quick and frugal and hails from "in-laws, old friends, new friends, church folk, firehouse cookbooks, PTA potluck dinners and eccentric neighbors."

This everyday cookbook establishes Tosi, chef and co-owner of Momofuku Milk Bar, as an exciting and original voice. Tosi's second outing (after Momofuku Milk Bar) steers away from the whimsical desserts she creates for David Chang's restaurant empire, and instead focuses on the daily dishes she makes at home: "Think Desperation Nachos" and a faux–sous vide "Bird in a Bag." Tosi continues to showcase her singular flavor combinations—there's unmistakable wow factor in miso butterscotch sauce and burnt honey butter served alongside kale with sesame seeds. As is to be expected, her fondness for mass-produced flavors informs recipes such as Fruity Pebble Meringues and Ritz Cracker ice box cake with Cool Whip." A reliance on ready-made ingredients like crescent roll dough and cake mix, along with simple presentations, means Tosi's guilty-pleasure creations are more accessible to the home cook this time around. A sense of humor and a love of cheese (literal and processed) are required. Color photos. (Apr.)

“I’ve been a bootleg member of the Milk Bar family for a while: Christina and I have gone to Hawaii and made malasadas together, and every time I’m in NYC I like to hang out in Brooklyn bothering everyone in the bakery. Christina is a leader not only in the kitchen but also in the way Milk Bar has shaped our recent culture—and lives. Kogi por Vida, Milk Bar for Life.”
