LaCava grew up in 1960s Texas and has always loved history. JFK's assassination imprinted her sense of identity at an early age, not being one of those hostile, lawless Texans the press talked about. After marrying a Dallas man, the work of historians and researchers so plentiful there, sent her seeking truths behind Camelot on a lark. During fiction studies at SMU later on, she invented a family impacted by political assassination, and through those characters explored the imprint on our collective psyche. Countless personal stories were affected while the nation came apart. LaCava and hubby laugh a lot, they are blessed with grown children who are wonderful humans, and a grandson smitten with stories of other times too. Reliance on two rescued mutts as her muses keeps the writer grounded: in mirth and agreeability.

Weary of Cold War politics, CIA operative Gabriel Haines can't wait to leave the Company life for a job on his friend's isolated Texas ranch. All he needs to do is go to Dallas and seal the deal. But when President John F. Kennedy is assassinated just yards from where Haines stands, the former agent finds himself in tighter crosshairs than ever before. Keeping a low profile on the ranch couldn't come at a better time.

Motherless preteen Ivy Jean Pritchard is a worrier, but she's trying hard not to be suspicious when her father sends her to spend the weekend on a ranch with family she's never met. And with her troublemaker teenaged cousin, high-society aunt, and her uncle's mistress on the scene, it promises to be more than the western adventure Ivy had anticipated.

Now, marksmen have tracked Haines to the ranch, getting the entire family involved in something very adult and very worrisome. When the weekend turns deadly, Haines and Ivy Jean are the first to learn that secrets, especially those devised and perpetuated "for the good of us all," can breakdown a family--or a nation--in the blink of an eye.

Although LaCava's work is fiction, her historical references and detailed descriptions of the life of a CIA operative give the novel authenticity..the depiction of teenage psyche in Ivy Jean's behavior and thoughts are perfectly crafted. Told from an omniscient point of view, the author allows us to follow the various subplots, developing her characters as the action unfolds..an enjoyable read, which kept the reader's interest through fast paced action and the promise of revelations to come.

LaCava uses impressive historical research, effectively depicting the simmering burn of the civil rights movement and Vietnam, and demonstrates an astonishing ability to convey the feel of the era without becoming dry or preachy. At the same time, her portrayal of a spunky, motherless preteen girl, a neglected mistress and a world-weary spy are realistic and never stereotypical. ..measured use of imagery vividly evokes locations across TX and MS..riveting..brisk plotting..engaging characters.

"I am so impressed by this book. It was impeccably researched, and it immerses the reader in the 1960s. LaCava brings the events and uncertainties surrounding the assassination of Kennedy to light while blending that tragedy in with the lives of her characters. There's a chilling account of Tucker's time in Mississippi.. a tragic section where the crucial importance of having legal and safe abortions is made clear.. also a grand coming of age story..transports the reader..it's a marvelous book.

...has all of the promise of a John Wayne western mixed with a James Bond spy thriller..Set in the 1960s Cold War and tracking alongside JFK's assassination makes it not only an interesting read but the mixture of genres is a good one and creates an excellent commentary on the damage that state secrets have on families and on people as well. Fresh..an excellent addition to your library that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The first real news story I remember is JFK's assassination. And this was not just another conspiracy story. It had just enough conspiracy to add to the story of a family on the edges of it all.
