Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) was a Victorian author and short story writer. An accomplished novelist, Gaskell's best known works include MARY BARTON, NORTH AND SOUTH and WIVES AND DAUGHTERS. She is noteworthy for her extensive use of dialect in her stories, as well as a strong Gothic streak in her ghost stories.
