Charles Kingsley (1819–1875) was an English clergyman, university professor, historian, and novelist—most closely associated with the West Country and Hampshire. Among his novels, the best known are Hypatia, Westward Ho!, and Hereward the Wake. He is also the author of the children’s classic The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby, a story about a boy chimney sweep.

During the unjust and corrupt world of the Roman Empire, the Reverend Kingsley asserts, certain Christian mystics and ascetics proved that men could live in harmony and brotherhood. He illustrates this point in his 1869 collection of biographical sketches of Saints Paul, Anthony, Basil, Simeon Stylites, Severinus, Malo, Brendan, and others.
