General Henry E. Davies (1836-1894) was born in New York and studied at Harvard and Columbia before becoming a lawyer. He entered the army in 1861 and rose to major general. After the Civil War, he chose to return to the law. Davies served as the Public Administrator of New York City and Assistant District Attorney for southern New York. His works include Ten Days on the Plains (1871) and Davies Memoir (1895).
